Description including Unit Aims

This unit aims to provide basic training in the development of the type of numerical model often applied to environmental problems. Example models are drawn from a range of environmental systems and aim to support the material presented in other year-four (A and B) courses. They also serve as illustrative examples of a range of different modelling strategies. The unit will use the MATLAB modelling software. Initial meetings will focus on programming and data analysis within this package. A series of five modelling case studies will then be presented that progressively build in their complexity. Typically sessions will start with a lecture-based introduction to the topic, followed by a practical period in which students will develop $hands-on& skills in the application of the particular model. The emphasis will be on the practical development of computer programs to solve the particular environmental model under consideration. The mathematical theory underlying these models will be kept to an absolute minimum.
