In this unit we will discover and discuss the interrelations between German history and film, focusing on the German past since 1933 (Third Reich, GDR, contemporary united Germany). We will reflect on various ways in which history is presented within and through feature films as well as on what film can tell us about the past. In this regard the course will provide students with a broad range of knowledge about German history and culture and introduce basic principles and methods of critical discourse analysis. Students will be required to contribute to the seminar with short presentations and written work.
