Description including Unit Aims

This unit forms one of a number of lecture-based survey units, each of which stands alone, but which are designed as a package, to give students a broad understanding of significant aspects of European art from 1000 to 2000, during the first and second years of the program. The unit will follow a basically chronological pattern, with lectures largely, but not exclusively, devoted to the study of individual artists. It will be divided into five sub-sections to give thematic unity, and will consider critically the style categories known as Rococo, Neo-classicism, Romanticism and Realism, as well as the phenomenon of Modernism.
