This unit is an introduction to cathedral and church buildings from architectural, artistic, liturgical and social perspectives. Cathedrals will be discussed in the context of other great church buildings - monastic churches, collegiate foundations, and some parish churches. The unit will consider the variety of ways in which cathedrals and churches were used, including pilgrimage, commemoration of saints, commemoration of the dead, royal or institutional ceremonial, as well as the daily and yearly round of church services. The decoration of cathedral and church buildings will be considered, with attention to the ways in which stained glass, sculpture and other decoration contributes to the experience of the individual and the community using the building. Visits will be used, where possible, and students will be encouraged to consider these buildings at first hand, especially local examples such as Bristol Cathedral, St Mary Redcliffe and Clifton Cathedral.
