Throughout history, human beings have put disproportionate resources into expressing religious faith through architecture. The resulting structures include many of the greatest aesthetic achievements of mankind. They were also the settings for many other artworks, from the statues to alterpieces, of enormous artistic significance. This course will introduce the subject of religious architecture, focusing on Western Europe (especially in the medieval period), but drawing in comparative examples from other cultures. Students will learn how to look at buildings in general and gain a crucial perspective on understanding the artwork they contain. Field trips will be part of the course.
