Description including Unit Aims

This unit will explore the treatment in Renaissance art of themes centering on women - Old Testament heroines, female saints, the Virgin and the Magdalene, goddesses and mythological figures, courtesans and ideal beauties, witches and sirens. We will contextualize the production of art with woman as subject by identifying patterns of patronage, display and consumption in this period, especially by and for women. There will also be an examination of the different types of media in which the theme of woman was deployed: panel paintings, tapestries, maiolica, amongst others.
