European Art 100-1400 deals with art and architecture, primarily in England, Italy and France, but also to a lesser extent, in Germany and the Netherlands. The unit will follow a broadly chronological but also thematic pattern. It will acquaint students with some major buildings, woks of art and personalities of the period, introduce students to key issues and concepts connected with the study of this material, such as style, patronage, function and interpretation, and will reflect upon the ways in which art of this period has been treated in the secondary literature in the past, and is now being treated as a result of new approaches and recent research. The unit uses critical, historical and anthropological approaches to question traditional notions and approaches to medieval art, including narrowly style-based approaches which have viewed this period mainly as a precursor to the Renaissance.
