Description including Unit Aims

This unit will examine the theme of classical receptions in Victorian painting, introducing students to the wider concepts of the transmission of styles, academic theory and tradition, notions of classicism and classicisation, as broader processes within art history. Works by artists from Turner to Alma-Tadema will be analysed to investigate particular topics such as decadence, narrative, representation of history and mythology, genre depictions of social life, landscape, and the nude which will be used to explore how the classical past was projected through images which often reflected contemporary social and cultural values.
