Description including Unit Aims

This unit will investigate Early Modern attitudes towards the male body and the ways in which these views affected its representation in sculpture, paintings, prints, and to some extent, architecture. Contemporary literature and art theory, as well as modern studies of art and masculinity will underpin the examination of specific works of art. Artists as diverse as Michelangelo, Holbein, Drer, Bronzino, Cranach, Hilliard, Titian, and Lotto will be amongst those explored.
