This unit will explore the large body of extant Tudor portraits with reference to specific examples in the collections of the National Portrait Gallery. Study of Tudor portraits will range from seminar discussions of the conceptual issues relating to portraiture in this period, and the biographies of individual Tudor patrons/sitters, to scientific investigation of paintings in the conservation studios of the NPG. The result of this study will be an exhibition of Tudor portraits in the NPG exhibition spaces at Montacute House, Somerset. Students will play an active curatorial and educational role in the installation of this exhibition.
