Description including Unit Aims

To introduce students to the multiple interpretations of the figure of El Cid from medieval to modern prose and verse accounts, up to the film version of the twentieth century; to examine the transformation of historical fact into heroic legend, and the intrusion of mythic elements, with particular attention to studying contrasting uses of the hero-figure in varieties of artistic and political discourse in different historical and cultural contexts.
