Don Quixote is the most celebrated and influential work to have been written in the Spanish language. It is also one of the longest, most varied, and subtle. This unit will combine close textual analysis with a critical overview of Don Quixote and its subsidiary tales, considering its humour, literary range, and thematic-ideological dimensions, formed in the contexts of (a) contemporary fiction and literary theory and (b) modern interpretation of the work.
