Description including Unit Aims

To introduce students to the historical origins of the problem of national versus regional authority and identity in the Iberian Peninsula in the context of a study of diverse causative factors suggested by recent research. Areas to be studied include pre-medieval influences, the formation of the early medieval kingdoms of Christian Spain, the role of Muslim Spain, the consolidation of the Christian kingdoms and the emergence of a unified monarchy; the course will also examine briefly the post-1516 development of relations between the centre and the regions.
