This unit aims to explore the problems which writers have in writing about themselves and asks why autobiography has become such a representative genre in the late twentieth century. Aspects covered include: writing and gender, the relationship between self and society, the body and its text, the construction of subjectivity, the politics of autobiography, and autobiography as history.
