With the completion of the Internal market, the Maastricht and Amsterdam Treaties and the ever increasing penetration of Community law into the national legal orders of the Member States, European Community and Union law takes on new dimensions. This unit explores the constitutional basis of the EU, considering its institutional framework, theory and options for future European integration; sources and fundamental doctrines of Community Law and judicial protection in the EU. It serves to build a solid basis of understanding of the EC and EU for students who have not studied the topic before. Students cannot take both this unit and Law and Policy of the EU. The two units cover similar ground in the first term, but thereafter this unit concentrates on theoretical, constitutional and judicial protection issues.
