This unit explores some of the most interesting and controversial areas of Community policy. It investigates the various attempts by the Community to regulate the labour market and to facilitate the improvement of working conditions. The role of the different actors: the Commission, Member States and the Court is addressed. A focus of the unit is the 'worker' in Community law, considering her/his gender, economic activities and position as citizen of the Union. We will also focus upon the position of third-country nationals and whether a 'Fortress Europe' is being constructed. Finally we will look into the future of social policy in the light of the Amsterdam Treaty. The unit assumes students already have some knowledge of the workings of the EU.
