Description including Unit Aims

This unit will deal with the legal regulation and management of international security. In particular, it will consider the United Nations system by examining the prohibition on the use of force, the right to self-defence, humanitarian or pro-democratic intervention, the international legal responses to terrorism and the United Nations system of collective security. In this context we shall also consider the role and efficiency of international sanctions, peacekeeping and peace-building operations as well as the role and operational capabilities of regional systems such as NATO, EU or ECOWAS. The study will be supported by investigations into current or past events such as Korea, the Gulf war, Somalia, Haiti, Liberia, Bosnia, Kosovo or Iraq.
