This course aims to give students a critical awareness of the legal techniques used in the creation of the EU internal market - the dismantling of trade barriers as a form of 'negative' integration, as well as the creation of a harmonised market law through positive forms of Community legislation. It discusses the theoretical foundations of the integration process; its objectives and current problems (has the Community acheived a balance between national (social and political) autonomy and the benefit of supranational economic governance?); and what roles the Community's institutions have played in the integration process.
