The unit will study the medieval book as a physical object endowed with multiple significance and functions, and will trace its structure and roles in the period from late Antiquity to the Reformation, from the origins of the codex to the introduction of printing and the advent of formal book censorship. It will place medieval books in the history of the wider context of Western European textual culture, and will concentrate on more detailed examination of books from c.1100 to c.1560, including the physical study of the structure of manuscripts, the circumstances and processes of their production, their ownership and use. The focus of the unit will not be restricted to books produced in England.
