Description including Unit Aims

Through the study of several examples of the work of two of the greatest Spanish playwrights of the twentieth centur (in English translation), this unit will explore the theatre of Spain in the two decades preceding the Civil War. It will consider the different ways that Valle-Inclan and Lorca renewed and revitalised a theatre donminated for decades by naturalism, introducing instead on to the Spanish stage characters whose lives are dominated by passion, pain, conflict and suffering articulated through poetry, the grotesque, fantasy and imagination.
