Description including Unit Aims

This unit will introduce students to the study of a range of Italian film stars, in a variety of historical periods. Using approaches from star studies and cultural studies, students will analyse selected stars both in terms of performance style and their relation to the mise-en scene of the films in which they appear, but also in terms of their star persona, and the multiple text that construct this persona. As well as highlighting issues and theoretical approaches related to genre, auteurism and gender, the course will address the thorny issues of the cinematic spectator and audience, and the cinema industry itself, understood as a transnational one. Indicative list of stars: Anna Magnani, Sophia Loren, Marcello Mastroianni, Stefano Abccorsi, Riccardo Scamarcio, Monica Bellucci.
