Why is there something rather than nothing? Martin Heidegger called this question, posed by Leibniz, the fundamental question of metaphysics. In this course we consider the interest of the question, its role in arguments for the existence of God, answers suggested by modern thinkers such as Parfit and Nozick, and arguments that the question is somehow illegitimate or unanswerable.
