This lecture is an introduction to the philosophy and history of chemistry for advanced students. It consists of several methodologically different attempts, historical as well as systematical, to give an answer to the headline question $?What is Chemistry&?. Some possible attempts to explain the still typical neglect of chemistry in professional philosophy (of science) will be collected from the literature and analyzed. Among others, hypotheses of complexity, reductionism, maturity, philosophical capability, and epistemological or ontological relevance will be discussed.
