This unit introduces textual interpretation as a primary method in political theory. Two 'classic'texts will be assigned for detailed analysis and interpretation. Emphasis will be placed on the students' reading of original texts (in English or English translation) in order to construct a contemporary interpretation analogically (rather than a contextual interpretation historically). Secondary reading will thus be focused on current political events and issues, rather than on scholarly commentary on the 'classics'. Different modes of assessment will be applied to each of the two 'set texts' as appropriate to ensure that students (a) study both to the same degree, and (b) develop different transferable skills through the assessment process.
