This unit seeks to ensure that students are ready to commence practice-based learning. It comprises three related parts. Part One (Policy, Law and Ethics) will introduce students to the legal, policy and ethical framework of social work practice, with reference to European and International law where appropriate. Part Two (Foundations of Social Work) will provide students with a critical understanding of the core tasks and skills of social work practice. These will be considered in relation to work with individuals, families, groups and communities. Students will have the opportunity to learn the fundamental techniques of assessment, negotiation, goal setting, intervention, monitoring and evaluation. Part Three (Communication and Interviewing Skills) will be skills-based, aimed at ensuring that students have a basic competence in communication and interviewing skills and are safe to undertake practice learning with service users and carers.
