This unit introduces students to theory, research and practice issues relating to three cross-cutting issues in social work, namely domestic violence (Part one), substance misuse (Part two), and child and adolescent mental ill-health (Part three). Throughout there will be an emphasis on inter-professional collaboration in assessment and intervention. A critical understanding of the causes and consequences of each and how most appropriately to respond, is relevant to social work practice with children and families, with older people, with mentally ill people, and with disabled people. Each part of the unit will provide a critical analysis of the definitions, prevalence and incidence of the problems under consideration, together with a critical review of the evidence relating to the perceived causes and consequences of each. Key features of the unit will be a focus on service users perspectives and on 'best practice', including 'what works' both with regard to interventions and the effective organisation of professional practice (across health, social care, education and criminal justice), and a critical awareness of the extent and quality of the knowledge-base underpinning these areas of practice.
