This unit will orient students to the ways in which the organisational context of professional practice impacts upon it. Part one (Social Work and Health) analyses the changing relationship between social work and health, introducing students to the potential of social work to promote health and well being, including an increasing emphasis on the importance of spirituality. The ways in which organisations impact upon the health and well being of both practitioners and service users will be examined throughout, and how concepts of health and well being can contribute to effective work with service users and carers. Part two (Organisations and the Professional Task) examines ways in which organisational contexts shape the conceptualisation and implementation of professional practice, drawing on relevant research and theory. Topics will include: organisational boundaries, individual and agency accountability, professionals and bureaucracies, teamwork. Students will be encouraged to think critically about how best to maximise organisational potential and how to minimise unintended/adverse consequences.
