Description including Unit Aims

This unit introduces students to the historical and literary study of the Bible as religious literature. The creation narrative of Genesis and the subsequent history and religion of Israel up to the post-exilic period are discussed in turn. The impact of Jesus on the first century CE is examined, beginning with his ministry and the rise of a 'Jesus movement' in Palestine through to Paul's mission to the Gentiles. In addition the students become acquainted with the various methodological tools used in the study of the Bible. Through this unit, students will receive the ground work for further study in both the Hebrew bible and the New Testament at levels I and H.
