After a brief look at the development of Buddhism in India after the death of the Buddha, this unit concentrates on the religious and philosophical foundations of Indian and to a lesser extent Tibetan Mahayana Buddhism. There will also be occasional references to Sino-Japanese forms of Buddhism. We shall look at some Mahayana Philosophical discussions of how things really are, the path to Buddhahood, and the changing status of the Buddha as well as the growth of devotional Buddhism. This unit or a close equivalent will be a prerequisite for any third level unit in Tibetan religions.
