Description including Unit Aims

Covering the period from 400 to 1500, this unit will address the theological and historical motivations behind the practice of the following: celibacy, fasting vigils, and bodily mortification. Emphasis will be placed on the study of particular monks, women religious, and theologians who greatly influenced the theory and practice of bodily renunciation in the Middle Ages.
