The course will begin with biblical foundations on church planting and church growth, exploring what it means to be $church&. From this basis the course will provide understanding of contemporary church planting by reviewing recent thinking (from 1980 to the present) regarding new ways of being church, as promulgated by theorists and practitioners. This will provide students with factual information on a selection of church-planting, new church and cell church situations. The principles which form the basis for new ways of being church will be analysed and evaluated. From this it will be possible to reflect theologically and missiologically on the issues presented by church decline and church growth, such as what is meant by success and why situations vary so significantly. The course will attempt to analyse sympathetically the factors underlying these varying results.
