1. The Unit will examine: a. current theories on the Dead Sea Scrolls and the group(s) which produced them; b. the various responses of Judaism to the Hellenization crisis; c. the emergence and separation of the Samaritan community; d. the rise of apocalyptic and various strands of messianism; e. the formation of the Old Testament canon. 2. Wherever appropriate these will be studied with reference to texts selected from the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha.
