The unit will build on groundwork done in B11001 Getting into the Old Testament. Topics studied will include: 1. the role of archaeological evidence in the various models currently being developed to explain Israel's emergence in Canaan; 2. the impact of archaeology on current understandings of the Conquest narratives; 3. archaeology&?s contribution to debate over the historicity of the early Israelite monarchy; 4. evidence for literacy in Iron Age Palestine; the archaeology of Iron Age towns and villages and its contribution to our understanding of Israelite culture and social structure; 5. the archaeology of Herodian Jerusalem.
