This unit follows the Fourth Gospel from its moment of production to its 'final' application within the work of a major theologian. In Part I a brief study of the original audience lays the groundwork for a literary examination of the Gospel of John's unique portrayal of the life of Jesus, a portrayal in which the Son is sent to act as both prosecutor and judge in a legal suit launched against 'the world' by the Father. In Part II an investigation into early responses to the Gospel's 'testimony to the truth' leads to a consideration of the use of John's theological claims by the German theologian Rudolph Bultmann.
