Daniel will be studied in the light of a number of different contexts which can illuminate a reading of it: 1. the sociological contexts of the eastern Jewish dispersion and of Palestinian Judaism at the time of the Maccabean Revolt; 2. the religious and literary contexts of Hebrew prophetic and wisdom traditions and the Babylonian mantic wisdom tradition. Consideration will be given to the evidence Daniel provides concerning the development of Jewish apocalypticism. There will also be exploration of different hermeneutic approaches to both the narrative and visionary parts of the book, with a view to developing theological insights which speak to contemporary issues.
