This course will set the reading and interpretation of this book within three separate genres (a) Hebrew Poetry, (b) Wisdom Literature and (c) Narrative Literature. It will involve a detailed reading of the text. 1) Exploring the narrative introduction and conclusion, and will ask the question, how this fits in with the whole work. 2) Exploring the Poetic Speeches. i. The speeches of Job&?s friends, who offer the contemporary and orthodox view of suffering. ii. The outsider, who also offers conventional wisdom. iii. The responses of Job to the conventional wisdom that has been offered to him. The question will be asked to what extent, if any, do the participants in the dialogue listen to each other. 3) Exploring the response of Yahweh to what, Job, friends and outsider have said. Finally the course will explore how the book of Job challenges:- i. Some prophetic voices ii. Some other wisdom perceptions iii. Some approaches to the recording of Israel&?s history.
