Description including Unit Aims

This course will investigate the shaping and development of Israel&?s faith in the Exilic and Post Exilic periods. This period had a profound and vital influence on the growth of Judaism and Christianity in the first century of the common era. The course will look at the &?historical human disaster&? of the exile, and the &?social and religious responses&? to that disaster. These responses were to provide a stimulus to the development of Israel&?s faith in two key areas:- 1) Prophecy 2) Wisdom The course will then investigate the story of Israel&?s faith in the Persian period. It will explore the political and social situation of the time, and show how this influenced:- 1) The Wisdom Tradition, and 2) the Development of Apocalypticism. The later colonial experiences of Israel will be examined and this will lead to a study of the Deutero-Canonical texts, sometimes called &?The Apocrypha&?.
