The aim of the unit is to introduce and critically consider the various modes of scriptural reception employed by the Jewish and Christian communities of the first millennium CE. Beginning with the $chaotic& reception of the Scriptures in the first century CE, the various early canonical processes$both Christian and Jewish$are traced. Specific ways of receiving the $Scriptures/Bible& by both Christians (e.g $Alexandrian&, and $Antiochene& Exegesis&) and Jews (e.g. $Halakah& and $Haggadah&) are outlined, with particular attention being paid to texts thought important by both communities. The impact of the commentary format and the appearance of the biblical material in other cultural media are considered before the unit concludes with the commentaries of Rashi in the 11th Century.
