This Unit gives students a basic grounding in employment law, employee rights and discrimination law through a series of three lectures delivered by a practicing employment solicitor. Following on from this, students are taught personnel management and the correct procedures (based on ACAS recommendations) for handling interviewing and employing staff, disciplining staff, grievance procedures and termination of employment. Staff training, staff development and appraisal are also covered, as is the induction of new staff. Two areas of particular focus are maternity rights and handling staff sickness and prolonged absences. This Unit gives students the practical tools required to handle a variety of personnel management issues.
