The early years of the 21st Century are marked by change in many sectors, not least in the sphere of legislative and policy moves in services for disabled people. The new mantra in social and health care is the issue of 'personalisation', which can be broadly interpreted as providing a system where support services are under the choice and control of the individual service user. Social, health and educational services are responding to these changes in some far-reaching ways. Changes in service organisation will affect directors of adult social services, educational practitioners, brokers, advocates, peer support services, personal assistants and many others. Importantly, disabled people and people with learning disabilities themselves and their family members are taking up new roles as active managers of their own services. The purpose of this unit is to review and discuss the latest evidence on these changes, to explore and critique concepts of personalisation, and to reflect on the changes and positive actions that will need to ensue. Although very closely related to practice, the unit will guide students in discovering ways of thinking which allow them to make sense of some of the changes they are experiencing in social and health care, as well as in education.
