Description including Unit Aims

This unit has two main themes: the history of archaeology and the introduction of a chronological sequence or time-frame. The History of Archaeology will trace the development of archaeology from 'Antiquarianism' into a professional and structured discipline with clear methodologies. It will cover Antiquarians such as Leland, Camden and Stukeley; it will examine the development of techniques, methods and theories under Evans, Childe, Crawford, Pitt-Rivers, Wheeler and others; it will introduce the recent history of archaeology from the 'Rescue Crisis' in WW2, to the founding of the National Trust, English Heritage, RCHME, CBA and IFA. The unit will also give students a basic understanding of the principal chronological sequence from the Upper Palaeolithic to the Post-Medieval period.
