Description including Unit Aims
The material remains of seafaring in European prehistory and history will be examined. Classes include an introduction to archaeology under water, discussions, and a museum visit.
Aims:
The unit designed to give a broad overview the practice and theory of maritime archaeology from what what defines it as a specific activity to the location, survey and recording of shipwreck sites and other underwater heritage. The will examine the contribution of underwater archaeology to the wider discipline of archaeology and the students will acquire a broad understanding of the scope and limitations of working underwater.
Intended Learning Outcomes
- have a broad understanding of classic examples of maritime archaeology
- recognize how sites are located through geophysics, historical research and survey
- understanding of teh basic principles of excavation underwater, including recording and survey, artefact recovery and conservation methods
- look at longer term issues, such as conservation of hull and artefacts and the protection of the underwater heritage
- appreciate how the archaeological record has contributed to the wider understanding of long distance trade, commerce and cultural connections across the seas from prehistory to the present day.
