Description including Unit Aims

This unit will apply the learning from Clinical Skills 1 and Hearing and Speech Sciences and develop students' communication and diagnostic skills, within university-based workshops and the clinical placement setting.

Intended Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of pure tone air conduction & bone conduction testing
  • Describe the principles of masking & its application
  • Describe the principles of impedance audiometry and acoustic reflex testing
  • Understand the procedure and contraindications for taking an aural impression
  • Identify the range of earmoulds available for use with hearing aids, their characteristics and acoustic modifications
  • Understand how to program digital hearing aids using computer software
  • Understand how and why Real Ear Measurements (REMs) are used when fitting hearing aids
  • Describe current government policies affecting health and welfare, such as clinical governance and public and private partnerships
  • Describe resource allocation and its implications for patient care within the clinical placement
  • Identify the networks of NHS and other agencies within which the placement department operates
  • Identify the policies and procedures for risk management and sharing confidential information with other agencies

Assessment Information

Assessment:

  • 2 x Written assignments ( 1500 words) 40 % each
  • Reflective placement summary (1000 words) 20%
  • Achievement of competency in relevant key skill areas whilst on placement (pass/fail)
  • Successful completion of this unit is essential for progression to year 3

Examination:

  • Clinical examination of Pure Tone Audiometry (practically based ) including *Masking (using APE simulator) Pass / Fail

Final Grade:

  • Successful completion of all aspects of coursework and completion of placement including satisfactory placement report from supervisor
