The unit covers a wide range of biochemical topics at an advanced level, and emphasises current developments in many branches of the subject. There are about 90 core lectures which cover the fundamental aspects of cell signalling and trafficking, cell and molecular biology, membranes and transport, and the structure and function of proteins. These will be supplemented with additional lectures (30 or so) which are chosen by the student from the options listed under BIOC 30300 and BIOC 30400. Students are also expected to attend Departmental Colloquia given by invited speakers from outside this department. Students will carry out two projects on which short dissertations are submitted: (i) a practical project conducted (in either the first or second term) in a research laboratory, and (ii) a literary project which constitutes a review of the scientific literature on a chosen topic.
