This unit will provide instruction on aspects of ecological and comparative animal physiology. The course will have two related emphases: i) understanding physiological and biochemical mechanisms underpinning adaptation to habitat, and ii) animal responses in extreme habitats. The unit will have a strong aquatic element but will consider terrestrial animals. Examples of specific habitats to be considered are expected to include: the inter-tidal and rock pools, hydrothermal vents, the sulphide habitat of mud-flats, estuarine and hyper-saline waters, arid zones and high altitudes.
