The aim of this unit is to develop and reinforce students& skills in the reading of Latin, and to introduce them to the comparative practical criticism of classical texts. We will be looking at two Latin $takes& on the story of Troy, Aeneas& description of the night of Troy&s sack in the Aeneid, and Ovid&s exchange of letters between Paris and Helen which, in this version of the story, precipitates their affair. As we read, we will consider a number of contemporary theoretical perspectives relevant to the interpretation of these texts, including genre, narratology and epistolarity.
