Description including Unit Aims

Through the examination of three different modes of discourse - history, philosophy and satire - this unit will examine the part which the attitudes of Tacitus and Seneca played in the representation of three Augustan successors (Tiberius, Claudius and Nero), and how their discourses offer sometimes cohesive, and often disparate portraits of the Julio-Claudian dynasty; Above all, this unit seeks to place the "Roman" authorship in its social context and examine the intricate web of ideologies that contribute to formulating our perception of the Principate.
