This unit will explore current provision of services to deaf people in the fields of social services, technology, education and language support, interpreting, and health, particularly mental health and the care of elderly deaf people. Students will consider the functions of these services, the basis for their provision and the implications for deaf people. The role of deaf people as service providers will also be considered. The rationale behind the service provision and the implications for deaf people and the deaf community will allow further understanding of the relationship between the wider British hearing society and the deaf community. Note: it is possible that this unit may be taught in BSL. Students considering taking this unit should consult the unit director.
