Description including Unit Aims

The Teaching Unit comprises 5 Elements: 1. Periodontology 1 2. Removable Prosthetic Dentistry 1 3. Operative/Endontology 4. Advanced Restorative 5. Periodontology 3

During the pre-clinical and clinical parts of the dental course, students are taught the key skills that are required to allow them to treat patients in Restorative 2 (Clinical). The Restorative Dentistry disciplines of Operative Dentistry, Endodontology, Prosthetic Dentistry and Periodontology are taught in an integrated manner.

Year 2 The Elements in the Unit of Restorative 1 (Skills) covers all of the preparatory teaching in Restorative Dentistry leading to the treatment of periodontal patients in term 3 of year 2 of the BDS programme. Before starting on the clinics, students will have been taught many of the clinical techniques, such as simple restorations, scaling and the construction of dentures, as part of the Elements of Periodontology 1 and Removable Prosthetic Dentistry 1. In addition, the teaching in the Unit of Biomaterials underpins the understanding of the various subjects covered. In the latter Unit, the teaching in the Element of Basic Biomaterial Science takes place in year 2 term 1 and precedes the initial teaching of Operative Dentistry and Endodontics and Removable Prosthetic Dentistry 1. The second Element of teaching in the Unit of Biomaterials is Applied Material Science and the teaching of this Element takes place alongside the teaching of the Elements in the Unit of Restorative 1 (Skills). This teaching is inextricably linked.

Year 3 Operative Dentistry and Endodontology takes place in term 1 of year 3. The timetable includes various technical and simulated clinical sessions that take place during this second term of teaching in Operative Dentistry. This course takes place in the Clinical Skills Laboratory and is designed to provide the students with the essentials of what they need to know to begin whole patient care when they enter Clinical Restorative Dentistry. It lasts for the full length of term 1 which is 14 weeks long and runs alongside the Human Disease course which is the other major teaching unit that the students receive during this term. The Element of Applied Dental Materials continues to take place alongside the teaching of the Elements in the Unit of Restorative 1 (Skills). This teaching is inextricably linked. Removabale Prosthetic Dentistry 2 takes place during terms 1 & 2 of year 3. The timetable includes various technical and simulated clinical sessions which takes place in the Prosthetic Teaching Laboratory, Adult Dental Health Clinic and Clinical Skills Laboratory. This will provide them with the essential skills they will need to know to treat patients with prosthetic requirements.

Year 4 Students return to the Clinical Skills Laboratory at the start of year 4 term 2 for the Advanced Restorative course that takes place during the 14 weeks of that term. In year 4 term 3 students have a series of workshops that comprise the Element of Periodontology 3. The Element of Applied Material Science, part of the Unit of Biomaterials takes place alongside the teaching of this Unit. All teaching is inextricably linked.
