Given imperfect markets and limited investment by the state in human development in low-income countries, the family assumes an important role in the allocation of resources. For this reason, the course will discuss alternative ways of modelling household decision-making and the household economy. Topics discussed include child labour, equity and efficiency trade-offs within the household, heterogeneity in preferences between spouses and consequences of this modelling household decision making, parent altruism, son-preference and implications for investments in health and education of boys and girls.
